Cancellation and Refund Policy

Court Reporting Institute of Kansas City

Cancellation Prior to the Start of Class or No-Show

If a student withdraws prior to entering the Court Reporting Program or never attends class (no- show), CRIKC shall refund 100% of the tuition but retain the initial, non-refundable enrollment fee.

First Week of the Semester

If a student withdraws during the first week after entering the Court Reporting Program, CRIKC shall retain 10% of the tuition and the non-refundable enrollment fee. When determining the number of weeks completed by the student, the institution will consider a partial week the same as if a whole week were completed, provided the student was present at least one day during the scheduled week.

After the First Week and through Fifty Percent (50%) of the Semester

If a student withdraws after the first week and through fifty percent (50%) of the period of financial obligation, tuition charges retained will not exceed a pro rata portion of tuition for the training period completed, plus ten percent (10%) of the unearned tuition for the period of training that was not completed. CRIKC shall retain the non-refundable enrollment fee.

After Fifty Percent (50%) of the Semester

If a student withdraws after fifty percent (50%) of the period of financial obligation is completed, CRIKC shall retain the full tuition, including the non-refundable enrollment fee.

A semester is defined by a student’s start date plus six months and is renewed every six months until completion of the Program. If a student is receiving financial aid, with an enrollment period that extends beyond six months, the refund will be calculated in six month increments from student start date.

Machine Writer Deposit and Rent

If a student withdraws at any point during the enrollment agreement, and the student has rented a machine writer from the school, the student is expected to return the machine to the school in good working order at the time of withdrawal. Upon inspection, if the machine is verified to be in good working order, the machine deposit will be refunded to the student. Advanced monthly rental payments on the machine also will be refunded, minus the month in which the student withdraws.

If a student is administratively withdrawn, the student will have two weeks to return the machine writer to the school. If the student fails to return the machine, the school will retain the machine deposit. Advanced monthly rental payments on the machine, however, will be refunded, minus the month in which the student is administratively withdrawn.

Books, Supplies and Instructional Equipment

Theory Component of the Program:

A student will need to secure the following:

  • A machine writer. At the start of their training, students may opt to rent a manual stenotype machine from Court Reporting Institute of Kansas City for $30.00 per month, plus $150 deposit. At the end of six months the student should purchase their own machine writer. Rental payments may not be used for purchase of the rental machine. A student machine can be purchased for approximately $500 to $1800. A professional machine can be purchased for approximately $1300 to $5600. (NOTE: Purchase of a computer compatible machine is highly recommended at this time, because such a machine will be required when the student begins the Speedbuilding IV class.)

Speedbuilding Component of the Program:

  • The Court Reporting Institute of Kansas City utilizes a unique and proven educational tool called the StenoWave™ system for its speedbuilding program. This allows for students of different speed levels the opportunity to sit side-by-side in the same classroom while working at their own speed level. The StenoWave™ system is one of the largest digital audio libraries in the country. Students access dictation material on-site via personal laptop computers or school provided desktop computers. Students also have access 24/7 to practice material via the internet.

A speedbuilding student will need to secure the following:

  • A laptop computer. (This is for use with the StenoWave™ system. However, the school does have a limited number of desktop computers on site on a first come, first serve basis for those students who have not yet purchased a laptop). Laptops can be purchased starting at about $400.
  • CAT (Computer Aided Transcription) software. The speedbuilding student is required to start using software when entering the Speedbuilding IV class (120 wpm). Student may choose from several vendors that sell software at a dramatically reduced student discount rate. Student software can range anywhere from $0 to $600.
